According to the authorities, at least 25 Afghan security forces were killed in a Taliban attack in the northern Afghan province of Tachar on Wednesday night. The fighting with the attackers continued, the provincial governor's spokesman Javad Hejri told the AFP news agency. There were also deaths among the radical Islamic Taliban fighters.
The health director of Tachar Province, Abdul Kajum, put the death toll among the security forces at 34. Among them was therefore the deputy chief of police of the province. According to Kajum, the Taliban fighters had positioned themselves in surrounding houses to ambush the security forces deployed.
The attack marks a new setback in intra-Afghan efforts for peace. The conflict between the government in Kabul and its western allies on the one hand and the Taliban on the other has been raging for almost 20 years.
