In southern Sicily, southern Sicily, the volcano Etna came to life again and began to spew lava flows on Tuesday afternoon. Due to the thick smoke rising to a height of up to one kilometer, the local airport in Catania was temporarily closed. However, local authorities have said that residents of nearby villages are not in danger. SkyTG24 informed about it.
Footage published by Italian television shows a red stream of lava flowing down the snowy peak of Mount Etna and dark smoke rising from its main crater.
However, according to the head of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), there is no danger to the local population. We have seen a worse situation, Stefano Branco told the Italian news agency AGI.
Etna is the most active volcano in Europe, smoldering almost constantly. It has several main craters and three hundred smaller craters, from which hot steam and gases also emanate.
The last time Etna spewed lava more significantly last December, when the lava fountain reached a height of up to 100 meters and the locals found volcanic ash on the street, balconies and cars the next morning.
The majestic Mount Etna, which is over 3000 meters high, is also a popular tourist destination. Trips are organized to its slopes and vines thrive at its foot, among other things. Since 2013, Etna has also been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
