London accuses the Chinese authorities of committing violations against the Uyghurs

Britain accused China on Tuesday of committing human rights violations against the Uyghur minority, as it announced new rules banning the import of goods suspected of using forced labor.

Foreign Minister Dominic Raab told MPs that the violations took place on a large scale, adding that Britain has a moral obligation to respond. It is really a horrific barbarism ... it occurs today in a prominent member of the international community.

The British minister confirmed that his country would create new rules for companies to try to prevent goods coming from the Chinese region of Xinjiang from entering the supply chain, in toughening London's response to the allegations of forced.

Raab told Parliament that there was ample and horrific evidence of forced labor among Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang after the United Nations estimated that at least a million of them and other minorities were being held in a concentration camp. Beijing denies the accusations.

Raab said Britain wanted to ensure it was free of any products with links to Xinjiang, citing widespread reports of detention camps housing more than a million Uyghurs, forced labor and forced birth control of Uyghur women.

It is not known how many Xinjiang-related products enter Britain's supply chain.

Raab said Britain would put stricter guidelines on sources of supply, toughen modern slavery, and include fines, ban any government contracts from companies that do not comply with procurement rules, and launch a review of Xinjiang's export controls.
