The car Market in the European Union at the beginning of the severe drop ever. According to the ACEA manufacturers' association, it fell by 24 percent to 726,491 vehicles in January, the lowest value since data collection began.

Spain reported a 51 percent drop in sales, Germany by 31 percent and Italy by 14 percent. In Austria the decline was minus 38 percent. In France, sales fell by only six percent, while Sweden even recorded an increase of 22 percent. According to ACEA, this is because new registrations in Sweden were particularly low a year ago due to a tax increase.

The German car companies Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW all posted double-digit declines. Volkswagen was hit hardest, just under 27 percent as a group and 30 percent for the VW brand.
