The dam in Serbia is experiencing an ecological genocide. There is up to 40,000 cubic of garbage

After heavy rains, the Lim River washed away everything people threw into it, from Plav in Montenegro to the Potpeć Dam near the Serbian town of Priboj. Locals now call the lake a floating landfill. Experts estimate that 40,000 cubic meters of garbage have accumulated near the dam, which is already threatening the operation of the hydroelectric power plant. About half of the waste usually sinks to the bottom and is very difficult to remove.

According to locals, the biggest polluter is the landfill near the town of Prijepolje, which is located directly on the shores of Lima. Environmental activist Saša Bijelić said, The view of the mountain of garbage aroused resistance among the people, so they closed it under public pressure. However, it has not been rehabilitated, so Lim continues to flush waste from this landfill, especially when it has a higher level. According to him, the authorities were also unable to find adequate compensation for the canceled landfill, and a lot of waste from other inappropriately located landfills ends up in the river again. According to the Serbian edition of the BBC station, there are 70 wild or unsecured landfills on the banks of the Lima. The practice of inappropriate storage of waste or its dumping directly into the river is widespread in neighboring Montenegro, which in 1991 declared itself an ecological state. According to the N1, an ecological catastrophe destroys the tourist potential of an otherwise picturesque mountain region. The locals who farm on the land around the river are also unhappy with it. Sometimes I pull up to 50 tires out of the meadow, complains Zlatan Turković from Prijepolje. Serbian authorities plan to build a 300-meter-wide pontoon barrier across the dam to collect alluvial debris. Siniša Laković from the environmental association Jastreb believes that the measure could help, but above all, according to him, the storage of waste around the river should be banned. Bijelić said, Do you think it can be solved by a barrier? The problem must be solved at the state level, but we have not yet seen the will to solve it seriously.
