The French President closes the file of the apology to Algeria

The French presidency has renewed its rejection of the issue of apology for the crimes committed by occupied France, in Algeria, a decision that followed the deposit of historian Benjamin Stora, his report on colonialism and the Algeria war, as it is called in the French political literature.

The Elysée Palace stressed that Paris will not offer an apology to Algeria for the crimes of the occupation, but it intends to take symbolic steps to address this file, which has often poisoned bilateral relations, and is still disguising (Macron) by doing so for promises he made during his visit. To Algeria in February of 2017, when he was just a candidate in the French presidential election, according to the newspaper Chourouk.

During that visit, Macron made statements that were considered at the time revolutionary and unprecedented, and from what he said, It is unacceptable to glorify colonialism, which is part of French history, as he said, and more than that he considered a crime against humanity, and these statements left favorable Great among Algerians, but it became clear later that the statement of the French presidential candidate is not like someone who had become a guest of the Elysian Palace.

As it turned out later that Macron at that time was courting the electoral base of Algerians in France to support his election campaign, and at a time when Macron had to take a historic position that would get him out of the circle of French presidents who were unable to solve this dilemma.

Macron tried to play on all the strings, hoping not to lose All, which is not realistically possible in light of the deep-rooted historical hostility between the two countries, when he decided to combine the contradictions, by celebrating the anniversary of the suppression of the Algerian protest in Paris on October 17, 1961, the National Day of the Movement corresponding to September 25, and the date of the signing of the Evian Accords on March 19, 1962, As stated in the statement of the Elysee Palace.

Although Macron refused to apologize to the Algerians, he apologized to the widow of a fighter for Algerian independence who was killed by the French, Maurice Auden. Sharing this fighter with the Algerians defending the same cause, however, differs from them in that he is of French origin, and the Algerians considered that apology a discrimination, even if they welcomed the decision and considered it fair.

Pending the lifting of the curtain on what was included in Benjamin Stora's report, attention remains directed to the Algerian side, which in turn is preparing a report expressing the other point of view, and it was assigned to it, as is known, to the advisor at the Presidency of the Republic, Abdel Majid Sheikhi, who made some of his recent statements. He outlines his perception of the report he is preparing, which will not necessarily be what the French hope for.
