The trial of former French Prime Minister Balladur on charges of corruption started


The trial of former French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur began today, Tuesday, on charges of illegal campaign financing. Balladur has been charged with aiding and abetting the misappropriation of assets, charges he denies. If found guilty, he could face several years in prison.

According to local media reports, Balladur, 91, was present at the court.

The case dates back to arms deals struck during the 1990s, the proceeds of which were reportedly used to fund Balladur’s presidential candidacy in 1995.
