'There is no doubt Australia will hit 10 per cent unemployment

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says there is no doubt Australia is on its way to 10 per cent unemployment towards the back end of the year when the JobKeeper program is phased out. May’s unemployment data released on Thursday revealed more than 227,000 jobs were lost. The rate soared to 7.1 per cent, the highest Australia as seen since November 2001.

Mr Clennell said., These (Thursday’s figures) are the labour force survey figures, they are a survey. We now have 1.6 million and they are not all participating. When there were 800,000 unemployed in this country, we had five per cent (unemployment). You can’t tell me at the end of this all 3.3 million of those are going to be in a job. When JobKeeper comes off, you will lose potentially hundreds of thousands more. We are looking at 10 to 12 per cent unemployment at the back.

There are about 1.6 million Australians on the JobSeeker program which is also known as the Newstart allowance. There are currently 3.3 million people on the government’s JobKeeper program.
